Dispersants flow into Gulf in ‘science experiment’

By Ed Lavandera, CNN

Dispersants keep flowing

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

New Orleans, Louisiana (CNN) — Chemical dispersants keep flowing into the Gulf of Mexico at virtually unchanged levels despite the Environmental Protection Agency’s order to BP to “significantly” scale back, according to a CNN analysis of daily dispersant reports provided by the Deepwater Horizon Unified Command.

When the May 26 directive was issued, EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson said dispersant use should be cut by 75 percent.

Public statements at the time made by the EPA administrator gave the impression that federal officials were trying to cut down overall dispersant use.

“We expect to see a substantial reduction in the overall amount of dispersant used,” Jackson said in May.

‘Nerd’ shocked his toys in G20 weapons cache

Brian Barrett handles some of his fake and harmless homemade weapons. He saw his “toys” displayed prominently at a press conference Tuesday where police claimed the ends were wrapped and ready to be doused with gas. (VERONICA HENRI/QMI Agency)

Police are living in a fantasy world if they think arrows on display Tuesday had anything to do with the weekend G20 violence, a Whitby man said Wednesday.

Brian Barrett was shocked to go online Tuesday and see a photo gallery showing toy weapons seized from him while en route to Mississauga for a fantasy role-playing game.

His hand-made scale armour, cushion-tipped arrows and hockey-taped shields were among the items Toronto Police chief Bill Blair said were “seized from criminals” who wreaked havoc on the city Saturday.

They weren’t the only misleading items on display during a Tuesday press conference.

When Blair was asked about a chainsaw and crossbow, he agreed they had been seized from a man near The Esplanade in an incident unrelated to the G20 summit.

“Some of the things that are related are these arrows with devices tied on to them so that they could pour gas on them, ignite them and shoot them at us,” Blair said. “That was seized from criminals.”

Not so crazy? Reuters probes idea of nuking BP oil well

umbrella Not so crazy? Reuters probes idea of nuking BP oil well

MOSCOW/WASHINGTON (Reuters) -

His face wracked by age and his voice rasping after decades of chain-smoking coarse tobacco, the former long-time Russian Minister of nuclear energy and veteran Soviet physicist Viktor Mikhailov knows just how to fix BP’s oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico.

“A nuclear explosion over the leak,” he says nonchalantly puffing a cigarette as he sits in a conference room at the Institute of Strategic Stability, where he is a director. “I don’t know what BP is waiting for, they are wasting their time. Only about 10 kilotons of nuclear explosion capacity and the problem is solved.”

For some, blasting the problem seems the most logical answer in the world. Mikhailov has had a distinguished career in the nuclear field, helping to close a Soviet Union program that used nuclear explosions to seal gas leaks. Ordinarily he’s an opponent of nuclear blasts, but he says an underwater explosion in the Gulf of Mexico would not be harmful and could cost no more than $10 million. That compares with the $2.35 billion BP has paid out in cleanup and compensation costs so far. “This option is worth the money,” he says.

Israel’s new master plan Quietly, Israel is preparing the biggest illegal land grab in recent memory, all on Obama’s watch

Khaled Amayreh

A few days before his scheduled visit to Washington on 7 July, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu appears as deliberately thwarting American efforts to push forward indirect talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA).

This week, an Israeli government body was set to approve “an unprecedented master plan” for an all-out expansion of Jewish settlements that would effectively — using the words of one Palestinian official — “decapitate” East Jerusalem’s Arab identity.

The plan would see the building of tens of thousands of Jewish-only apartments in East Jerusalem to be constructed on Arab owned land.

The Jerusalem Municipal Council, controlled by fanatical Jewish radicals advocating ethnic cleansing of non-Jews in the city, is trying to enforce the plan with a discernible green light from the government.

In essence, the plan would leave a zero room for future expansion of Arabs in Jerusalem, as virtually all remaining open space or “green areas” would be used for “Jewish development”.

The estimated 270,000 Arab East Jerusalemites are already confined to a mere 13 per cent of East Jerusalem while more than 85 per cent of the city has been seized by Jewish authorities since 1967, when Israel occupied East Jerusalem and the rest of the West Bank.

According to Palestinian officials, the plan — if carried out — constitutes a turning point in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and will surely lead to an early and potentially violent collapse of the shaky and uncertain peace process.

“I don’t believe that the peace process will withstand the reported plan to expand Jewish settlement in Jerusalem. In fact, the main goal of that plan is to kill any remaining hope for peace,” said Ghassan Al-Khatib, a PA spokesman in Ramallah. “This is more than a provocation. It is actually a decapitation of the peace process.”

Snowplows Ready To Remove Abandoned Vehicles from Highways When Evacuations Occur

Greg Evenson

It has been approximately three weeks since former State Trooper and Secret Service appointee Greg Evenson appeared on The Waterman Files to discuss what his inside sources are telling him about the situation in and around the Gulf of Mexico.  Today, Evenson discussed and updated the situation with John

Greg Evenson stated that it was suggested to him by University of Texas researchers that four to five weeks ago (which he described in a broadcast on May 27th) that there were reports from the U.S. Geological Service that an earthquake was precipitated at eleven miles below the ocean floor when drilling at the Deepwater Horizon site went as deep as thirty thousand feet – not the deepest well on earth, but the deepest ever penetrated into such a major source deposit of [this type of] oil, which is why it is coming up red and radioactive. The reports from the U.S.G.S. indicated that this earthquake may have fractured the ocean floor which would explain the oil seeps at seven to twenty-eight miles away that may not be coming from the drill site at all, but by cracks in the ocean floor caused by this and the giant deposit.

Evenson, discussing the problem with separating fact from fiction when determining the situation in the affected regions stated that, “The time for silliness and… extraordinary statements that have no basis… really need to be called out of the debate because we are losing time, we’re losing ground every moment. It may be [entertainment] to some, but to others it is deadly serious business, and I mean deadly serious…”

Who really controls BP?

There’s a lot of talk about BP being a British company.

Actually, the ownership and control of the company is a lot more complex.

Some facts not reported in the news:

1. 29% of BP is owned by JP Morgan and US companies own 39% of it total

2. Halliburton, one of the main contractors on the rig, is considered the party responsible for failing to cap the well properly. They moved their headquarters out of the US to Dubai recently.

3. The former CEO from 1997 to 2009 who was ousted by a sex scandal was also Chairman of Goldman Sachs. Goldman sold a massive amount of its BP holdings in early 2010 and one of its employees bragged in an e-mail in early April that they were “shorting” the Gulf and looking forward to huge profits from an environmental disaster there.

European Court Of Human Rights Rules Police Terror Stops Illegal 010710police3

The European Court Of Human Rights has officially ruled police “stop and search” powers, under UK Terrorism laws, illegal for the second time, rejecting a government appeal.

Under Section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000, police can stop and search anyone without reasonable suspicion.

The British High Court and the Court of Appeal have previously ruled that the powers are legitimate given the risk of terrorism in London.

However, the use of the powers by the police was ruled illegal by the European Court in January, a decision that paves the way for protesters, photographers and everyday citizens to fight back against such gross invasions of privacy.

The government attempted to challenge that decision, however, permission to do so has now been refused. The European Court also announced that any future appeals would not be accepted.

The court in Strasbourg referred to stop and search powers as not in “accordance with the law”, and a violation of article eight of The European Convention on Human Rights – the right to respect for private and family life.

People advised to avoid Gulf Coast as health concerns emerge

By Bill Lindner

73 days after the Gulf Coast oil crisis began, with all the secrecy still surrounding it, concerns over adverse health conditions – and suspicions that BP will keep much of them covered up – are growing and people are being advised to avoid affected areas.

More than two months since the Deepwater Horizon oil rig blew up, causing the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history, as oil continues spewing unabated into the Gulf of Mexico and reaching land in several states, health concerns of residents and cleanup workers in the areas affected by the spill are growing.

There are reports from parts of Florida that water in the Gulf may not be safe for swimming. The CDC says that swimming in water affected by the oil spill will be unpleasant and could be harmful. They also recommend avoiding contact with oil that ends up on shore because coming into close contact with the oil for long periods of time can be harmful. More oil will be pushed onto Gulf Coast beaches and further inland this hurricane season, which will reportedly shut down BP’s clean up and recovery efforts for a couple weeks.

German motion urges end to Gaza siege

The German parliament
In an unusual demonstration of unity against Israeli policy, a German cross-party motion is urging the parliament to call on Tel Aviv Israel to lift the Gaza blockade.

The German parliament is expected to back the motion, urging Israel to immediately lift its comprehensive blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip in 2007.

The government of Chancellor Angela Merkel is under internal pressure to work on the resumption of peace talks in the Middle East and include Hamas in negotiations.

“The living conditions of the civilian population of Gaza must be urgently improved,” said the motion, adding that the blockade was counterproductive.

“You shouldn’t talk to them (Israelis) in a way which raises their international standing — unless they show a substantial change in their position,” the motion added.
