Old soldier drops three bombshells

When Paul Epley finally talked publically about some of his secret military activities, his story ended up in a 
small North Carolina newspaper. Guess what? Two weeks later, two FBI men showed up where he was working and said, “If you don’t keep your mouth shut, we’ll shut it.”
That was in the 1990s, but today Paul no longer cares if they kill him. He’s 80 years old, fighting cancer and wants to get three things off his conscience. On August 8, 2010, two of us from the Sky Ship website and two men with video cameras were invited to his home to record stories that have haunted him nearly his entire life. We also were given access to documents and an earlier video that originally weren’t to be released until after his death.

Endless War, Humanitarian Crisis, and Perpetual Resistance: U.S. Foreign Policy in the 21st Century
In 2009, the mainstream U.S. media reported with satisfaction that the Pakistani government had finally responded positively to the United States and NATO’s demands[1] for an aggressive military policy aimed at depriving the resurgent Taliban of “safe havens” in Pakistan.[2] The subsequent offensive, featuring a Pakistani invasion of these areas and aerial assaults by the U.S. and its NATO allies, and has become just another unexceptional element of the open-ended military campaign formerly known as GWOT (the “Global War on Terror”), but which, under the Obama administration has continued without a name. It receives little attention from the mainstream media, which is focusing its limited attention on Afghanistan, to the exclusion of the other “hot wars” the U.S. is currently conducting in Iraq and Pakistan.
In neglecting to cover the process and impact of the Pakistan war, the U.S. media has ignored or recorded in a perfunctory manner (often as add-ons to Afghanistan coverage) major developments in this war, particularly the humanitarian crisis it has created.
One vivid, pregnant, and immensely significant instance of this casual treatment of events that alter the history of the host country was the coverage of a recent United Nations report focused on a single campaign in the Pakistan war. The Associated Press[3] reported it thusly: “More than 200,000 people have fled Pakistan’s latest offensive against Taliban militants in the northwest, the United Nations said Monday, as fresh clashes in the remote region killed 41 insurgents and six soldiers.” Later in the article, it emerged that this major displacement in a single region—running at about 50,000 displaced per month—was matched by other campaigns in nearby areas, with a total, according to the United Nations, of 1.3 million refugees “driven from their home by fighting in the northwest and unable to return.”
But even this 1.3 million refugee figure was still a partial number, because it did not include the impact of the various earlier and parallel campaigns carried out by Pakistan, NATO special forces, and the increasingly infamous drone attacks piloted by remote control from thousands of miles away. These offensives had produced, by June of this year, about 3.5 million displaced persons, including several hundred thousand rendered homeless for more than a year.[4] This humanitarian disaster was therefore one magnitude greater than the agony of Darfur, which in mid-2010 was estimated to have displaced 2.7 million people,[5] though Pakistan’s disaster still lagged behind the Iraqi total, which had reached or exceeded five million.[6]
What never appears in the U.S. media is the process by which these military offensives translate into massive displacement. Unlike our unformed image of these wars, which pictures people fleeing the fighting and then returning when (and if) peace and/or security returns, these military campaigns leave permanent damage behind that usually—at least given the current goals and policies of the United States—have little chance of being repaired. Therefore, the displacement is likely to be long term for a substantial proportion of its victims, with all the misery that refugee status implies.

The Economy When Debt Is Everywhere

Greece forced into a harsh reality, madness, next is Spain, Portugal and Italy to be sold to IMF servitude for decades, twenty countries now headed into bankruptcy, no relief from unemployment, reduced US GDP, a million jobs to be lost… nightmares for the economy ahead.
Debt is everywhere and it certainly is onerous. We all have heard about the sovereign debt crisis, the debt of Greece and the debts of Ireland, Spain, Portugal and Italy. During that process the euro fell from $1.50 to $1.187; which gave euro zone exporters quite an advantage. The euro has since rebounded to a high of $1.33 and for now settled in near $1.28. Business confidence is back, but in the meantime the next course of action is to be higher taxes and austerity. Even consumers believe things are not going to improve. They all probably see the advantages of a cheaper euro. Even the CDS premiums have disappeared, which means at least for now the crisis has been arrested with a Band-Aid called loans – loans that will take these countries years to repay accompanied by years of depression. As a result, Greece is on the edge of revolt.
As a result of austerity, imposed on Greece by its Illuminist led government, unemployment has hit 70% in some places. The country’s budget deficit has been reduced by 40%, truly draconian. Spending by government has been cut 10%, which is more than double what the EU and IMF has required. Bankruptcies abound and purchasing power and consumption have plunged. Consequently GDP has fallen 1.5% in the past quarter and tax revenue has fallen off a cliff. Companies, particularly in Perama and Piraeus still are sending ships to other locations for repairs, because Greek wage costs are still too high. In this world of free trade and globalization the cheapest wage gets the business. That means Greeks are going to have to work harder if they want employment. Experts say GDP will fall 4% this year, which will be severe, with 17% of shops in Athens already filing for bankruptcy.
Instead of this madness Greece’s leadership should have cut government spending by 30%, lowered taxes, defaulted fully or partially on their debt, left the euro and returned to a lower valued drachma. Now they’ll be in depression for years paying off bankers whose loans and bond purchases were professionally ill advised and the funds were created out of thin air.

Getting Us Used to the Age of Austerity: You’re Going to Live in Abject Poverty Unless You WAKE UP!
There’s normally little of interest worth writing about in the Irish media these days. Unless we want to come here to discuss the latest cult fashion or the size of the latest bimbo’s breasts that’s about it but today in the Irish independent it’s not the one article that caught my attention but the many articles which all let us know that we’re really in trouble here and there’s nothing we, the public, can apparently do about it.
Take for instance the story of a 16 year old boy with a growth on his brain who has collapsed 3 times already. This young lad desperately needs an operation to remove the growth or more than likely he will die. So what does the hospital do? They try to basically throw him out onto the street to fend for his own health because apparently someone else needs the bed?
So now it appears that doctors are deciding quite openly who gets to live and who gets to die. Obviously in the eyes of the morons in charge of Sligo hospital, the unnamed recipient of the soon to be vacant bed has more value to society than this young lad. Is this what we pay our taxes for? Since when was health care a matter of rationing?

Talking of rationing, we’re being again given the nonsense that Dublin is running out of water. Reading the article through it seems to have been written by a child. It makes little sense and simply repeats the mantra that the draining the Shannon River will make no difference to the Shannon River. Really?
They do mention water rationing of course. This is apparently due to the increased demand although as usual with such scare stories there is no explanation as to where this ‘demand’ is coming from. I thought we were getting into a depression and that businesses, who use water I presume, are closing at an ever increasing rate whilst at the same time people are abandoning the country in their droves. So where is the extra demand coming from? I suppose it must be from all those extra cups of tea we’re drinking while trying to think of having a shower or a bath, to save the planet of course. So apart from healthcare rationing mentioned above the people of Dublin face the rationing of one of the essential elements vital to life and good health. God forbid you get sick!
This is all of course just another thinly veiled propaganda piece to push the idea of a water tax, sorry water meters on already struggling households.

This despite the fact the taxpayer is already ‘bailing’ them out to the tune of €3.25 BILLION which of course they won’t even lend back to the people who gave them it, that being we the people. This is nothing but gangsterism dressed up as failed capitalism but thinly disguised as what it really is UTTER FRAUD!

Less than two weeks ago Americans were glued to their TVs for footage of the “last brigade” of US soldiers withdrawing from Iraq. With embedded MSNBC journalists and in-studio officials trumpeting a military victory, an America exultant in having finally “won” the war, it was extremely successful, and that 50,000 US troops are still there and hundreds of Iraqis have died since the announcement was really only a minor hiccup.
It was so successful, in fact, that the Obama Administration has decided to do it again, which is one of the advantages fake endings of wars have over actual endings. Tuesday, when the President addresses the nation, he will again be trumpeting this victory, and with much fanfare.
There are even rumors that former President George W. Bush will take part in the festivities, as something of a founder-of-the-feast, having made all the fake ends to the war possible with his decision to launch the ill conceived conflict in 2003. The White House has so far been mum on whether or not Bush will have any particular role, but has assured that Obama will not say “Mission Accomplished” during his address.
President Obama is said to be planning to focus his speech on claiming credit for the illusory victory, while lauding the other ongoing war in Afghanistan. Vice President Joe Biden is in Baghdad for the commemoration there, as are 50,000 US troops that officials are desperately trying to label something other than “combat” troops.
Blair, Mugabe secretly forge close ties
The Former UK Prime Minister has secretly hosted the Zimbabwean President in a bid to win lucrative trade deals for Britain, newly declassified documents revealed.
The documents published by daily Independent showed that the Labor-led government under Tony Blair and Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe forged close relationships after Blair took office.
The British premier wrote a personal letter to Mugabe on May 1997 thanking him for his role in promoting relations between the African continent and the UK, the daily said in a report.
Mugabe had been courted for visiting London and holding face-to-face talks with Blair in the Downing Street after being elected as the leader of the Organization of African Unity, the report said.
Tony Blair had been secretly negotiating with Harare for wining close trading and political bonds irrespective of the European Union and the US condemnation of the Zimbabwean President as “totalitarian”.
In a letter dated 11 June, the Foreign Office urged the Prime Minister to accede to Mugabe’s request for an official visit to Downing Street.
“This may be a useful opportunity for an exchange of views in advance of CHOGM [the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting]. After South Africa, Zimbabwe is the most important country in southern Africa to us both commercially and politically,” the memo reads.
“Despite domestic criticism arriving from recent financial scandals, and his failure so far to respond to renewed serious allegations by Zimbabwean NGOs of his involvement in atrocities in Matabeleland in the early 1980s, Mr. Mugabe remains a senior African and Commonwealth figure with whom there would be advantage in establishing early close relations. We recommend that the Prime Minister sees him if his program permits.”
In the run-up to the Commonwealth conference, Mugabe was optimistic about forging closer ties with Britain.
“I have great hopes of Tony Blair,” he said. “Mrs. Thatcher described me as a terrorist but Tony Blair is different.”
Iran to publish Israeli-linked firms list

Iran will publish a list of Israeli-linked companies by next week to apply sanctions against them, Iran’s Vice-President for Parliamentary Affairs Mohammad-Reza Mir-Tajeddini says.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry presented a list of multi-national companies with Israeli connections to the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission last week, Mir-Tajeddini told Mehr news agency on Monday.
The Iranian official further pointed out that the list will be published in the media upon an agreement made by the Iranian Parliament and the country’s government.
He went on to say that Israel has an influential economic cartel across the world and it is constantly establishing new companies under new brands and Iran will expose them after the anti-Israel sanction is applied.
In June, Iranian lawmakers approved a bill calling on the Foreign Ministry to establish a major effort to enforce a total embargo on Israeli goods. They agreed to task a committee with identifying Israeli companies and institutions.
The committee is comprised of representatives from the Central Bank of Iran, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting and the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Economy and Finance, Commerce, Intelligence and Oil.
The Iranian lawmakers stipulated that the Foreign Ministry present the list to the Majlis within two months of the ratification of the bill.
The ministry should submit a report on the issue to the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission annually or whenever required.
The ministry has also been required to put forward a proposal for the boycott of Israeli commodities at international meetings, including the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the Non-Aligned Movement.

Furious that state involvement in major terror attacks is being exposed to a wider audience than ever before via the Internet, a UK think tank closely affiliated with the Downing Street has called for authorities to infiltrate conspiracy websites in an effort to “increase trust in the government”.
“A Demos report published today, The Power of Unreason, argues that secrecy surrounding the investigation of events such as the 9/11 New York attacks and the 7/7 bombings in London merely adds weight to unsubstantiated claims that they were “inside jobs,” reports the London Independent.
In other words, the fact that the overwhelming amount of evidence indicates that both 7/7 and 9/11 were “inside jobs” of one form or another, and that huge numbers of people are now aware of this via the increasing influence of the Internet, is hampering efforts to commit more acts of terror, therefore the government needs to change its strategy.
In the report, Demos, “Recommends the Government fight back by infiltrating internet sites to dispute these theories.” One of the tools Demos already employs to “fight back” against conspiracy theories is by labeling anyone who challenges the government’s official story as an extremist or a terrorist recruiter.
The strategy mirrors that advocated by White House information czar Cass Sunstein, who in a 2008 white paper similarly called for conspiracy websites to be infiltrated and undermined in order to dilute their influence. In the same report, Sunstein also called for taxing conspiracy theories (any viewpoint that differs with the official version) and outright banning free speech that the authorities disapproved of.
What Demos and Sunstein are essentially calling for is classic “provocateur” style infiltration, updated for the 21st century, that came to the fore during the Cointelpro years, an FBI program from 1956-1971 that was focused around disrupting, marginalizing and neutralizing political dissidents, often using illegal methods.
The fact that governments on both sides of the pond have been caught over and over again habitually lying about everything under the sun, allied to a compliant corporate media that has aided authorities in covering up their misdeeds, has prompted a complete collapse in trust from the people, an effect that is now seriously hampering the state’s efforts to enlist implied consent, with millions of people rebelling against the system through civil disobedience and non-compliance in a myriad of different ways.
That’s why Demos, a mouthpiece for the British authorities, is desperate to infiltrate “conspiracy websites,” ie groups of people who broadcast the truth, in order to “increase trust” in a government that has lost all credibility.

21,000 people evacuated as Indonesian volcano continues to spew ash for miles around
Aircraft have had to be diverted and more than 21,000 people evacuated after an Indonesian volcano erupted for the second day in a row.
Towering clouds of ash are being spewed out of Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra and thousands of villagers living on its slopes have been forced to head to emergency shelters, mosques and churches.
Homes and fields containing crops have been blanketed in heavy, gray soot and the air near the volcano is thick with the smell of sulphur.

HOMICIDAL RABBI FINDS WIDE SUPPORT IN ISRAEL

Early this month, intrepid reporter Jonathan Cook told of a powerful Israeli rabbi, Yitzhak Shapira, under investigation for allegedly inciting the slaughter of Gentile babies. He advocates doing whatever necessary to drive out Palestinians.
So far the policy has chiefly involved violent harassment of Palestinians, with settlers inflicting beatings, attacking homes, throwing stones, burning fields, killing livestock and poisoning wells.
It is feared, however, that Shapira’s book The King’s Torah, published last year, is intended to offer ideological justifications for widening the scope of such attacks to include killing Palestinians, even children.
…Shapira was released a few hours after his questioning last Monday, dozens of rabbis, as well as several members of parliament, rallied to his side, condemning the arrest.
Shlomo Aviner, one of the settlement movement’s leaders, defended the book’s arguments as a “legitimate stance” and one that should be taught in Jewish seminaries.
Shapira argues—correctly— that Talmudic “halachic” law permits killing Gentiles for a wide variety of reasons, including any time “a non-Jew’s presence endangers Jewish lives,” even if the non-Jew is “not at all guilty for the situation that has been created.”
The book sanctions the killing of non-Jewish children and babies: “There is justification for killing babies if it is clear that they will grow up to harm us, and in such a situation they may be harmed deliberately, and not only during combat with adults.”
The rabbis suggest that harming the children of non-Jewish leaders is justified if it is likely to bring pressure to bear on them to change policy. (emphasis mine)
The authors also advocate committing “cruel deeds to create the proper balance of terror” and treating all members of an “enemy nation” as targets for retaliation, even if they are not directly participating in hostile activities.
The chaplain for the IDF forces has said the same: “In war, when our forces storm the enemies, they are allowed and even enjoined by the Halakah to kill even good civilians, that is, civilians that are ostensibly good.” (Shahak, Jewish History, Jewish Religion, p. 76)
Judaism’s most sacred Scriptures, the Talmud and Zohar, contain many admonitions to kill Gentiles and Christians. Probably the most widely referenced by ultra-Orthodox in Israel today is that of the preeminent Talmudic sage Simeon ben Yohai. In Abodah Zarah 26b, he cries out, “The best of the Gentiles deserves to be killed.” (Jewish Encyclopedia, “Gentile,” p. 617) Simeon ben Yohai is regarded with the highest respect by modern religious Jews, meriting praise by the Encyclopedia Judaica as one of the giants of Judaism. In Israel today, during the Festival of Lhe-ba’Omer, “tens of thousands assemble in Meron, the traditional resting place of R. Simeon ben Yohai…” to honor him in a week of Kabbalistic singing and dancing. (“ Israel, State of (Religious Life),” Encylopedia Judaica, p. 903)
This, I suppose, explains how an Israeli rabbi can write what Shapira wrote… and be defended.
Department of Justice Lists Survivalists, Constitutionalists in Extremism Guide

A recent Department of Justice guide for investigators of criminal and extremist groups lists “constitutionalists” and “survivalists” alongside organizations like Al-Qaeda and the Aryan Brotherhood. The 120-page, “Law Enforcement Sensitive” guide to “Investigating Terrorism and Criminal Extremism – Terms and Concepts” describes itself as “a glossary designed primarily as a tool for criminal justice professionals to enhance their understanding of words relating to extremist terminology, phrases, activities, symbols, organizations, and selected names that they may encounter while conducting criminal investigations or prosecutions of members of extremist organizations.”
Constitutionalist, defined by Random House’s 2010 Dictionary as an “adherent or advocate of constitutionalism or of an existing constitution”, is described in the report as a “generic term for members of the ‘patriot’ movement”. Survivalists are described in the document as fearing a “coming collapse of civilization” and are trying to prepare themselves for this collapse. Such individuals are said to have “typically stockpiled food, water, and weapons, especially the latter, and instructed themselves on topics ranging from first aid to childbirth to edible plants”.

In Addition To Vaccines, Rockefeller Foundation Presents Anti-Fertility GM Food for “Widespread Use”

It seems there is no limit to the Rockefeller Foundation’s ambitions to introduce anti-fertility compounds into either existing “health-services”, such as vaccines, or- as appears to be the case now- average consumer-products.
The 1985 Rockefeller Foundation’s annual report underlined its ongoing dedication towards finding good use for the anti-fertility substance“gossypol”, or C30H30O8 – as the description reads.
Indeed, gossypol, a toxic polyphenol derived from the cotton plant, was identified early on in the Foundation’s research as an effective sterilant. The question was, how to implement or integrate the toxic substance into crops.
“Another long-term interest of the Foundation has been gossypol, a compound that has been shown to have an antifertility effect in men, By the end of 1985, the Foundation had made grants totaling approximately $1.6 million in an effort to support and stimulate scientific investigations on the safety and efficacy of gossypol.”
In the 1986 Rockefeller Foundation annual report, the organization admits funding research into the use of fertility-reducing compounds in relation to food for “widespread use”:
“Male contraceptive studies are focused on gossypol, a natural substance extracted from the cotton plant, and identified by Chinese researchers as having an anti-fertility effect on men. Before widespread use can be recommended, further investigation is needed to see if lowering the dosage can eliminate undesirable side-effects without reducing its effectiveness as a contraceptive. The Foundation supported research on gossypol’s safety, reversibility and efficacy in seven different 1986 grants.”
It seems that the funded scientists have indeed found a way of “lowering the dosage” of gossypol, circumventing the toxicity of the substance, so as to suppress or even eliminate these “undesirable side-effects”, which include: low blood potassium levels, fatigue, muscle weakness and even paralysis. If these effects could be eliminated without reducing the anti-fertility effects, the Foundation figured, it would be a highly effective and almost undetectable sterilant.
Although overtly, research into and development of gossypol as a anti-fertility compound was abandoned in the late 1990s, the cottonseed containing the substance was especially selected for mass distribution in the beginning of the current decade. Around 2006 a media-campaign was launched, saying the cottonseed could help defeat hunger and poverty.

Lynn III paints a picture of dire threat to American infrastructure, disclosing for the first time details of a devastating cyber-attack on U.S. infrastructure.
While not giving many specifics, Lynn described how malicious code on a USB thumb drive managed to spread across the Department of Defense network, establishing a “digital beachhead” that could siphon key data.
“It was a network administrator’s worst fear: a rogue program operating silently, poised to deliver operational plans into the hands of an unknown adversary,” he wrote. “This previously classified incident was the most significant breach of U.S. military computers ever, and it served as an important wake-up call. The Pentagon’s operation to counter the attack, known as Operation Buckshot Yankee, marked a turning point in U.S. cyberdefense strategy.”
However, “Operation Buchshot Yankee,” commenced in 2008 and lasting some 14 months, saw the Department of Defense scramble over what was essentially a very minor security threat that caught their network experts completely by surprise.

President Barack Obama blamed a “network of misinformation” for keeping alive persistent rumors that he is Muslim, but he shrugged off the misconception as being out of his control.
“There is a mechanism, a network of misinformation, that in a new media era can get churned out there constantly,” Obama said in an interview with NBC television.
He said the recurring controversy was something he will not allow himself to spend too much time on, however.
“I’m not going to be worrying too much about whatever rumors are floating out there,” Obama said.
“If I spend all my time chasing after that then I wouldn’t get much done,” the president said.
Opinion polls earlier this month showed that roughly one in five Americans wrongly believes Obama is a Muslim — even though the US leader is a church-going Christian who repeatedly has spoken out about his faith.
The rumors, which circulate largely on the Internet, gathered steam after Obama waded into a controversy earlier this month over plans to build a mosque near the site of the World Trade Center bombing at Ground Zero.
Obama at an Iftar dinner, when Muslims break their fast during the month of Ramadan, defended the constitutional right of Muslims to build a mosque near the New York site of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks — remarks which apparently confirmed the suspicions of some who believe he is an adherent of the Islamic faith.
He repeated the essence of those remarks to NBC on Sunday.

“Ground Zero mosque”: the art of missing the point
The ludicrous uproar over plans to build a Muslim community center in New York, the so-called “Ground Zero mosque” has dominated mainstream corporate news headlines. Political players from all sides, including President Barack Obama have joined the fray, attempting to prove themselves the superior “anti-terrorist”, or the better “commemorator of 9/11, when 3,000 people were killed by Muslim terrorists”. The right-wing is going berserk, gleefully.
Heated arguments have exploded around religion, tolerance, democracy, etc.—everything except the only fact that matters: 9/11 was a false flag operation, courtesy of the Bush-Cheney administration, carried out by an elite consensus, in order to justify the “war on terrorism”, and everything that came with it. Mass murder. Unending resource conquest. A police state within US borders. Open criminality.
The perpetual threat posed by a fabricated outside enemy, and a militarized, fearful populace, remain the centerpieces of elite policy, and they have been consistently maintained by both Bush/Cheney and Obama administrations. The demonization of Muslims continues to facilitate pillage.
While violent hatred continues to be directed at Muslims (and all “foreigners”), the criminals who truly massacred 3,000 people in the World Trade Center continue to enjoy power, wealth, and high positions of world “leadership” and remain in control of virtually every aspect of society. Electricity Could Be Pulled from Air, Research Claims
Dr. Francesco Galembeck of Brazil’s University of Campinas presented new research at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society that, he claims, could lead to a new method of collecting renewable energy. According to his experiments, it is possible to generate an electrical charge by passing water vapor, potentially in the form of humid air, over metal particles. Theoretically, this means that with the right materials, it should be possible to literally pull electricity from the air, collecting it like an electric sponge. However, the charge collected in the experiments was exceedingly small — not nearly enough to power much of anything.
America’s Top Military Chief: Debt is Main Threat to U.S. National Security … Pentagon Must Cut Spending
In February 2009, the head of U.S. intelligence – Dennis Blair – said that the global financial crisis was the largest threat to America’s national security. All of America’s intelligence agencies apparently agreed.
The same month, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff – Admiral Mullen – also agreed.
Now, Mullen is focusing on a specific economic threat. Specifically, Mullen is focusing on the debt:
The national debt is the single biggest threat to national security, according to Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Tax payers will be paying around $600 billion in interest on the national debt by 2012, the chairman told students and local leaders in Detroit.
“That’s one year’s worth of defense budget,” he said, adding that the Pentagon needs to cut back on spending.
But at least war is good for the economy, right? At least spending on defense will help the economy recover and climb out of this pit of debt, no?
Actually, no.
Nobel-prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz has said that war can be very bad for the economy. For example, in 2003, Stiglitz wrote:
War is widely thought to be linked to economic good times. The second world war is often said to have brought the world out of depression, and war has since enhanced its reputation as a spur to economic growth. Some even suggest that capitalism needs wars, that without them, recession would always lurk on the horizon.
Today, we know that this is nonsense. The 1990s boom showed that peace is economically far better than war. The Gulf war of 1991 demonstrated that wars can actually be bad for an economy.
Stiglitz has said that this decade’s Iraq war has been very bad for the economy. See this, this and this.
Blue Flu cases spreading around Gulf
“Blue Flu” infecting people along the Gulf of Mexico, other southern states?
Some people are calling it the BP Flu. But it is commonly being called the Blue Flu, because the alleged symptoms include blue lips and skin; and it’s scaring the hell out of people all around the Gulf area –from Texas to Florida.
This Blue Flu is separate from people experiencing something called TILT, or “Toxic-Induced Loss of Tolerance.” TILT is something that hit some of the folks who had been working on the massive cleanup surrounding the oil spill. Symptoms from TILT include eyes and skin being irritated, headaches and dizziness.
People with TILT are typically those who were in the immediate area of the spill, mostly those directly involved with the cleanup. Those suffering from Blue Flu are an entirely different matter. These are people who were not in direct contact with the spill, or the cleanup chemicals. They simply live in the south, near the Gulf.
Symptoms include swollen glands, notably in the neck, fever, vomiting, headache, bluish lip color, numbness in fingers and toes. The most alarming symptom being reported is “severe symptomatic cyanosis.” This is the entire body turning blue, a discoloration of the skin.

Twenty-two year old Manning, held in solitary confinement since May, has been charged with releasing classified documents including a video that shows American troops shooting and killing Reuters journalists in 2007. Famed Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg has called Mr. Manning, “A new hero of mine.”

Activists should work within their communities to organize events locally during the International Days of Action. If you aren’t involved with a local group, contact your local affiliate of Veterans for Peace, Iraq Veterans Against the War or Code Pink, or look for activist groups in your area.
Be Creative
Many activist groups are planning vigils, marches and rallies in support of Bradley Manning – but there are other ways to get involved. Some ideas:
- Consider throwing a Whistleblower Party – with whistles as party favors and a donation bucket for Bradley Manning’s defense fund
- Work with a restaurant or club in your area to organize a fundraising event
- Host a lecture with a local college and sympathetic professors or anti-war activists to talk about the importance of transparency in government
- Organize a public screening of Collateral Murder
Anything that spreads the word about Bradley Manning’s wrongful imprisonment will help. If you act during the International Days of Action, your actions will be part of a global support effort.
Evidence that Afghan leaders are on CIA payroll

A series of leaks to the New York Times and the Washington Post over the past week has revealed that members of the Afghan government headed by President Hamid Karzai are paid agents and informers of the CIA.
The revelations began on August 25 when senior Times’ correspondents Dexter Filkins and Mark Mazzetti reported that a close aide of Karzai who is accused of corruption, Mohammed Zia Salehi, had been on the CIA payroll for “many years”. The information was provided by anonymous sources “in Kabul and Washington,” suggesting it came from high up within the US military or the Obama administration itself.
Two days later, the Washington Post cited other US sources alleging that the “CIA is making secret payments to multiple members of the Karzai administration”. The Post stated: “The CIA has continued the payments despite concerns that that it is backing corrupt officials and undermining efforts to wean Afghans’ dependence on secret sources of income and graft”.
Mohammed Zia Salehi, who is the chief of administration of the Afghan National Security Council, is at the centre of a controversy between Washington and Karzai. In July, he was arrested by a US-created anti-corruption investigation unit. Wiretaps allegedly documented him requesting a $US10,000 car for his son, as his price for stopping an investigation into a money transfer company, New Ansari.
President Karzai intervened, and within seven hours had the arrest overturned and Salehi released. Karzai has also blocked attempts to arrest senior executives of New Ansari.
Any investigation of the company is clearly opposed by a significant section of the Afghan establishment linked to Karzai’s administration. New Ansari is accused of transferring hundreds of millions of dollars in cash out of Afghanistan each year on behalf of warlords, government officials and drug traffickers. A United Arab Emirates custom official said $1 billion in cash had arrived in that state last year alone.
The Times noted that “many Afghan officials maintain second homes” in Abu Dubai “and live in splendorous wealth”. Since 2001, the amount of money that has been plundered from the “international aid” sent to Afghanistan must run into the tens of billions. Large amounts also appear to have been simply handed over by the CIA in pay-offs and bribes.
Oil spill: BP reverses, admits there’s oil in local waters
Commercial fishermen working for BP have been recovering oil for over a month in Pensacola Bay while government officials deny the existence of this oil in the local waterways. (Special to the News Journal)
Despite persistent denials from BP last week, thousands of pounds of weathered oil is being pulled from under the surface of Pensacola Bay every day.
During more than a dozen interviews last week, BP officials and spokespeople for a number of government agencies working on the Deepwater Horizon Oil spill response denied knowledge of oil in the bay.
Even as they spoke, however, Escambia County officials and local fishermen were reporting finding weathered oil, as they’ve been doing for weeks. BP’s own crews were hand-scooping it up, and a submerged-oil team from BP’s Deepwater Horizon Response Incident Command Post in Mobile was investigating.
“BP says it’s all gone, but it’s not. I’ve known it was out there for a month,” said a commercial fisherman who asked not to be identified because he is working for BP in the cleanup and feared losing his job.

California students get tracking devices

RICHMOND, Calif.—California officials are outfitting preschoolers in Contra Costa County with tracking devices they say will save staff time and money.
The system was introduced Tuesday. When at the school, students will wear a jersey that has a small radio frequency tag. The tag will send signals to sensors that help track children’s whereabouts, attendance and even whether they’ve eaten or not.
School officials say it will free up teachers and administrators who previously had to note on paper files when a child was absent or had eaten.
Sung Kim of the county’s employment and human services department said the system could save thousands of hours of staff time and pay for itself within a year.
It cost $50,000 and was paid by a federal grant.

Israeli planes violate Lebanon airspace
The Lebanese military issued a statement through the National News Agency, saying that it observed an Israeli reconnaissance plane flying over southern Lebanon for about 17 hours.
“At 7:10 a.m. (0410 GMT) Sunday, an Israeli reconnaissance plane violated the Lebanese airspace over al-Naqoura village in the south, where it conducted several unwarranted flights,” the statement read.
“The spying plane later left at 12:00 p.m. (2100 GMT) from above Rmeish village,” it added.
According to the Lebanese military, four Israeli warplanes entered the Lebanese airspace over the southern border village of Kfar Kila at 10:00 a.m. (0700 GMT) and left an hour later while flying over Alma al-Shaab village.
Beirut complained to the United Nations in 2009 about the Israeli activity over its southern territory. UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended a 2006 conflict between Beirut and Tel Aviv, requires Israel to respect Lebanese sovereignty.
‘Gaza children suffer in Israeli jails’
“The difficult situation that Palestinian children and teenagers are dealing with in Israeli prisons is indicative of their innocence,” IRNA quoted Larijani as saying on Sunday.
“Palestinian children are in a very difficult situation and we can assist Palestinians and Muslims through our slogans and thoughts,” he went on to say.
In 2009, a report from the US-based NGO Save the Children estimated that over 6,700 children were arrested between October 2000 and April 2009.
Meanwhile, another children’s rights group known as Defense for Children International (DCI) announced that Israel routinely prosecutes Palestinian children as young as 12.
Both organizations confirmed that the ill-treatment and torture of Palestinian children in Israel’s custody were “widespread, systematic and institutionalized.”
Head of CDI’s Palestine Office Rifaat Kassis says the number of child arrests rose sharply in 2009, possibly because of a crackdown on Palestinian protests in the West Bank in the aftermath of Israel’s military offensive in Gaza.
Deadly fungus spreading across US and Canada

(NaturalNews) A research study out of Duke University has found that a dangerous mutated form of an airborne fungus called Cryptococcus gattii is spreading across the Northwest United States and some parts of Western Canada. The fungus, which typically only infects people with autoimmune disorders and compromised immune systems, now seems to be infecting healthy people as well, worrying experts.
Published in PLoS Pathogens, a journal of the Public Library of Science, the report explains that the new fungus is currently infecting people across the Pacific Northwest region and its scope is continuing to expand. Though the fungus was originally discovered in tropical and subtropical regions, it is somehow thriving in temperate regions far different than its native home.
“Between 2003 and 2006, the outbreak expanded into neighboring mainland British Columbia and then into Washington and Oregon from 2005 to 2009. Based on this historical trajectory of expansion, the outbreak may continue to expand into the neighboring region of Northern California, and possibly further,” explained Edmond Byrnes, author of the study.
