Discovery Channel Hostages: Gunman Holed Up In Building

SILVER SPRING, Md. — A gunman with what police described as “concerns” with the Discovery Channel networks took at least one person hostage in the company’s suburban Washington headquarters Wednesday.
Montgomery County Police Capt. Paul Starks would not say if the man works for Discovery Communications now or worked there in the past. He also would not say whether anybody was hurt.
Montgomery County fire department spokesman Capt. Oscar Garcia said three bomb technicians responded to the scene and several more were on their way.
The initial report was of a suspicious package that was possibly explosive, said Garcia, who also said no one had been injured. He said some employees had left the building.
Montgomery County Police Cpl. Dan Friz told WJLA-TV that a tactical team was trying to get in touch with the gunman, who was being monitored on closed circuit TV.
A person inside the building told The Associated Press the man had something strapped to his chest and had hostages. The person asked not to be identified, saying people inside were told not to speak to the media.
County government spokesman Patrick Lacefield said the hostage-taker was armed and claiming to have an explosive device.
It was unclear how many people were being held hostage, Lacefield said. Police evacuated the building, asked people in nearby buildings to stay inside and blocked off surrounding streets, he said.
ATF and FBI officials also said they were responding.

Discovery Communications LLC operates cable and satellite networks in the U.S. including The Discovery Channel, TLC and Animal Planet. Discovery shows include “Cash Cab” and “Man vs. Wild,” and TLC airs “American Chopper” and “Kate Plus Eight.”
Animal Planet also airs the controversial series “Whale Wars,” about attempts by environmentalists to disrupt the Japanese whaling industry.

US-led strike kills more Afghan civilians
Another US-led airstrike has killed several civilians in Afghanistan’s troubled south, amid growing public discontent over such attacks.
Afghan provincial officials say at least a dozen people were also injured in the fatal attack, which took place in Kandahar Province on Wednesday, a press TV correspondent reported.
NATO has not yet commented on the incident.
The incident comes after foreign troops killed three civilians and injured three others in the southern province Helmand.
The US-led military alliance says two women died on Tuesday during an airstrike against alleged Taliban militants.
Another civilian was killed in a separate NATO attack in the same region.
Most of the NATO forces in Helmand are British and American service members.
Loss of civilian lives at the hands of foreign forces has caused anti-American sentiments and deep anger among Afghans.
Thousands have taken to the streets in recent months, protesting against rising civilian deaths by US-led forces.

Pakistan floods displace another million people

More than a million additional people fled their homes in the southern Pakistani province of Sindh over the past few days as flood waters threatened further cities and towns. While authorities reported yesterday that waters were receding at least temporarily, large areas of the country are devastated and around 20 million people displaced.
Nineteen out of the 23 districts in Sindh are badly affected. “More than seven million people have been displaced in Sindh since August 3, one million only in the past two days,” provincial relief commissioner Ghulam Ali Pasha told Agence France Presse (AFP).
Floodwaters inundated the town of Sujawal on Sunday, forcing its 100,000 residents to flee. Local authorities attempted to minimise the impact but water levels in the town centre were up to 1.5 metres and over 3 metres in surrounding villages. Disaster management official Hadi Baksh told the Daily Times that half a million flood victims were camped at Makli. Most lacked any shelter and were in desperate need of food and clean water.
At the nearby city of Thatta, locals and army personnel worked frantically over the weekend to build and maintain makeshift levees to defend the town. Most of the population of 300,000 had already left. The city was reprieved yesterday as waters began to recede.
“The breach [in the levees] near Thatta has been half-plugged and fortunately the flood has also changed its course,” a local official told AFP.
Throughout the country, millions of people are struggling to survive in squalid conditions. “The magnitude of this crisis is reaching levels that are even beyond our initial fears, which were already leaning toward what we thought would be the worst,” Maurizio Giuliano, a UN spokesman said Friday. “The number of those affected and those in need of assistance from us are bound to keep rising… About one month from the onset of the floods, we don’t know when we will see their end, as the disaster is still unfolding.”
The relief effort remains pitifully inadequate. A major issue has been transport. Marcus Prior, a spokesman for World Food Program (WFP), commented: “People are in need of food staples to survive. There is currently no other way to reach these flood victims other than by helicopter.” Nasibullah Bazai, an official in Balochistan province, told the Dawn that emergency workers “need more helicopters and boats” to rescue stranded people whose numbers were increasing.
Wikileaked CIA Memo Warns of American Jewish Extremists Exporting Terror Abroad
A CIA memo released by Wikileaks on Wednesday looks at America’s long tradition of exporting violent extremism abroad, and its implications for U.S. foreign policy.
The United States has a long and rich history of exporting terrorism abroad, according to a CIA memo released by Wikileaks on Wednesday. After noting several incidents in which American Muslims launched much-discussed attacks abroad, the analysts warned, “less attention has been paid to homegrown terrorism… exported overseas” by non-Muslim groups.
The February 5 memo, marked “secret/ noforn” (the intelligence community’s designation for “not for release to foreign nationals”), was penned by the CIA’s “Red Cell,” a group tasked with “taking a pronounced ‘out-of-the-box’ approach” in order to “offer an alternative viewpoint on the full range of analytic issues.”
“Contrary to common belief,” noted the anonymous authors, “the American export of terrorism or terrorists is not a recent phenomenon, nor has it been associated only with Islamic radicals or people of Middle Eastern, African or South Asian ethnic origin.” According to the analysts, Jewish extremists “have supported and even engaged in violent acts against perceived enemies of Israel,” and “some Irish-Americans have long provided financial and material support for violent efforts to compel the United Kingdom to relinquish control of Northern Ireland.”
The report highlighted the consequences of American violence abroad. In 1994, Baruch Goldstein, an American Jewish doctor from New York, “emigrated to Israel, joined the extremist group Kach, and killed 29 Palestinians during their prayers in the mosque at the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron.” The deadly attack “helped to trigger a wave of bus bombings by HAMAS in early 1995.” Kach was founded by Meier Kahane, an American Israeli rabbi best described as a “radical cleric.”

US officials are using “invasive and aggressive” searches for those who refuse to go through their controversial full body “naked” X-ray scanners.
The “front-of-the-hand, slide-down technique” amounts to an indecent assault in any other context and shows an alarming disregard for privacy by the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA), civil libertarians say.
“People want to feel safe and secure when flying,” Civil Liberties Australia director Tim Vines said.
“And that includes feeling safe from the wandering hands of transport officials.
“The punishment for opting-out of an invasion of your privacy is an even greater invasion of your bodily integrity.”
Airport officials traditionally use pat-down motions to search travellers and the back of their hands when touching private areas.
While the TSA says it has received “very few” formal complaints about the new search techniques, Mr Vines called for a halt to the procedure until they could reveal why it was needed.
“The actions of the US TSA would amount to indecent assault if performed by anyone else in the community,” he said.

Unemployed people claiming the dole could be made to work in the community for their benefits, it has emerged.
Eamon O Cuiv, Minister for Social Protection, revealed the new measures could be enforced within months.
He plans to develop two schemes to give more opportunities to people who are out of work and want to maintain their skills and improve job prospects.
“Changing the way we approach our existing resources can unlock the potential of new ways to create locally-based jobs,” said Mr O Cuiv. “We must create a better future for people who find themselves without a job; to provide them with work activity in the short term, to up-skill them and give them opportunities to get back into the mainstream workforce as speedily as possible.
“Maintaining people’s employability through regular work activity will be important for getting people back into the competitive economy.”
It is understood that if claimants do not turn up for the hours they are expected to work, their benefits will be stopped.

Secrecy surrounding counter-terrorism operations is fuelling mistrust of authorities, a study by independent think tank Demos suggests.
It urges the government and secret services to be more open to stop extremist groups using conspiracy theories to discredit them.
A Demos spokesman said: “Less-secret services could make Britain safer.”
The study calls for greater communication with trusted community leaders and individuals.
The report – entitled the Power of Unreason – says groups use conspiracy theories to recruit and radicalise people to commit acts of violence.
An example of one such theory is that the bombings in New York and London, on 11 September 2001 and 7 July 2005 respectively, were “inside jobs” carried out by authorities in the US and UK.
Other theories highlighted were that “freemasons control the world economy through manipulation of paper currency”, that the UK government is “consciously seeking to destroy Islam” and that a “conspiracy between the Japanese government, the US, and the Jews existed to gain world domination”.
The study claims such theories are frequently adopted by extremist groups to demonise outsiders, discredit moderates and push them in a more extreme and sometimes violent direction.
The report’s authors made a number of recommendations concerning the counter-terrorism work carried out by MI5, MI6 and GCHQ and the government.

4 Babies Die After Vaccination in Lucknow
A routine immunization drive in Lucknow went awry after four children died within minutes of receiving a vaccine for measles followed by drops of Vitamin A solution on Saturday. The four children identified as Rekha, Sahil, Satyam Kumari and Sania hailed from Bindauva, Rampur Garhi and Padmin Kheda villages of Mohanlalganj, a district 30 km from Lucknow.
All the victims were under two years of age with the youngest being six months old. “A total of five children had fallen ill. All five were first admitted to a primary health centre in Mohanlalganj and then they were shifted to King George Medical College in Lucknow. “Four died on the way and one who is admitted to Lucknow hospital is battling for life,” said Dr S.C. Ram, director general, family welfare.
Serious reaction to the vaccine.
Since the children fainted within minutes of getting the injection, the enraged parents allege their death is due to lapse on the part of the officials or a deficiency in the vaccination. According to eye witnesses, no sooner had the kids got the shot that they exhibited serious reaction to the vaccine. The children became breathless, began to sweat. They felt faintish and did not recover there after. Their eyes rolled back and some fluid started coming out of their mouth (convulsion like symptoms).
Immunization drive suspended
As soon as the news of the tragedy spread, the immunization drive in entire Mohanlalganj block was called off. In an attempt to ascertain the cause of death the health officials and district administration reached the spot. According to experts, death after vaccination occurs either due to expiry of vaccine or if it is contaminated making it unfit for human use.
“It is difficult to ascertain which vaccination had caused the deaths. Only an examination of the samples and post-mortem of the children would reveal the truth. But this is an extremely tragic and unfortunate incident,” Dr A.K. Shukla, the chief medical officer, Lucknow, said.
Furious villagers on a rampage
Following the incident, nearly 600 villagers attacked the primary health workers and held three government doctors hostage. The furious villagers threatened to burn them alive. It was only after much persuasion by the local police that they were pacified and let the doctors off.
Local Magistrate Anil Sagar stated, “As news of the deaths of the children filtered down to the villages around 2 pm, a team of three doctors who had gone there to investigate the cause of the deaths were held hostage by the villagers in the office of the local health centre.”
Probe ordered by Health Ministry
The Health Ministry has set up a committee to probe the cause of deaths. Meanwhile, the entire batch of vaccines that might have poisoned the children has been recalled and samples of the vials have been sent for testing. In addition, the head of the immunization program in Mohanlalganj, Dr K.P. Upadhya, and four nurses who administered the shots have been suspended pending investigation.
“Prima facie it seems that the incident occurred due to spurious vaccine. This is a very serious incident. We will take appropriate action. Compensation of Rs 50,000 will be given to the families,” said Anil Sagar.

Global revolt against deadly vaccines spreads as cases of debilitating illnesses, soft-kill side-effects and even instant deaths become widespread.
Cases of debilitating illnesses, soft-kill side-effects and even instant deaths as a result of vaccinations across the world are skyrocketing as the cover-up of deadly inoculations implodes and more people than ever become suspicious about what they are being injected with by health authorities who have proven they cannot be trusted.
The implosion of the vaccine cover-up is sure to discourage more parents from vaccinating their children in the coming months, with the swine flu shot now being combined with the regular seasonal flu jab. A recent Rasmussen poll found that 52 per cent of Americans were concerned about the safety of vaccines as we approach the start of school and college terms, where many children and teenagers will be “required” to take shots before they can attend.
A global revolt against dangerous vaccines is brewing following a series of cases where children have been killed as a direct result of inoculations.
A measles vaccination program in India was halted after four children died almost immediately after receiving the shot. “Four children died within minutes of receiving a vaccine for measles followed by drops of Vitamin A solution on Saturday,” reports MedGuru.
Indian newspaper reports carried eyewitness accounts of what happened. “The four children were reported to have fainted soon after they were vaccinated and witnesses reported seeing the children’s eyes roll back as they began to have seizures,” reports Blitz.
Furious villagers reacted to the tragedy by going on a rampage, attacking health workers and holding government doctors hostage.
Health professionals and doctors with government ties were also blamed in Finland and Sweden after a H1N1 vaccination program was halted following a 300 per cent increase in cases of the neurological disorder narcolepsy amongst children and young people who had received the shot over the last six months.
According to Kari Lankinen, head physician of the Finnish Medicines Agency, doctors were complicit in hiding the link between the swine flu shot and narcolepsy and did so to advance their careers.
Meanwhile, concerned mothers whose daughters have been injured or killed by the Gardasil vaccine have put together a website that documents the truth about how the vaccine has killed and injured thousands of young girls since it was introduced in 2006. Thousands of teenagers have suffered adverse reactions and at least 71 have died from the vaccine since the HPV program was launched four years ago.
The global vaccine cover-up took a massive blow after it was confirmed that the 2009 swine flu outbreak was, as we predicted from the start, a contrived scam centered around making vast profits for pharmaceutical companies while endangering the health of the public.
